India’s AI-Enabled Bharat VISTAAR Platform: Lessons for Bridging Agricultural Information Gap in Sub-Saharan AfricaPrepared by: Dr. Pratap S Birthal, Prof. Sachin Kumar Sharma and Ms. Tanya Singh
Agriculture continues to play an important role in Africa’s socioeconomic development. However, its relative importance varies across the African continent. North Africa has a more diversified economic landscape, characterized by lower dependence on agriculture for income as well as employment. On the other hand, agriculture remains central to the economies of SubSaharan Africa, which accounts for approximately 80 per cent of continent’s land and 83 per cent of its population. Agriculture contributes 15–20 per cent to the gross domestic product (GDP) and accounts for 45-55 per cent of total employment across Sub-Saharan Africa (World Bank, 2025). Furthermore, this region is one of the poorest and most foodinsecure globally, with 33-40 per cent of the population living on less than US$ 2.15 per day per person (World Bank, 2022), and 55–65 per cent facing moderate to severe food insecurity risks (FAO, 2025). For these reasons, this brief note concentrates on Sub-Saharan Africa to prevent the generalization of conclusions that might arise if the entire African continent were treated as a single homogeneous unit for analysis.
