ITEC course on International Economic Issues and Development Policy (IEIDP)

Programme Objectives

The processes of global economic integration bring with them both challenges and opportunities for developing countries, as their growth dynamics depend increasingly on the external economic environment. In particular, policies of multilateral organizations such as the WTO, the World Bank and IMF, other UN bodies, regional development banks and regional associations/blocs have an important bearing on their development prospects. The developing countries in general lack capabilities to analyze the implications of emerging global trends for their economic growth. This adversely affects their ability to influence the outcomes of the international negotiations for protecting their interests and adopting policies to maximize advantages and minimize adjustment costs.

Such challenges have multiplied in the aftermath of the global pandemic, increasing climate vulnerabilities and Geo-political contestations. Given that India is current chair of G20, India’s leadership on some of the above issues become relevant for the course. India is fully committed to South-South Cooperation and this course is being organized in the backdrop of recently held Voice of Global South Summit 2023 led by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

The objective of IEIDP Programme is to contribute to building of analytical capacity in developing countries in the realm of international development policy. The Programme includes capacity building in areas such as global trading system and the WTO, international monetary and financial systems, South[1]South cooperation, regional economic cooperation, foreign direct investment and multinational enterprises, technology transfer and new technology in development, development policy reforms, among others. The Programme is expected to equip the participants with capabilities to understand and systematically analyze the implications of different global economic trends for their home countries and to work out suitable policy options and responses. Additionally, participants would also be exposed to India’s experience in the large scale development transformation in the recent years through implementing various flagship schemes like Ayushman Bharat, Jal Jeevan Mission, GATI Shakti etc. In this regard India’s strides in technology and Digital Public Infrastructure like the Jandhan – Aadhaar – Mobile (JAM) trinity, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) are also of key significance.
